Top 100 Best Irish Albums of All Time

1000 posts!

Happy 1000! This is my 1,000th post. Quite an achievement right? So to celebrate, I've made a list of the top 100 Irish albums of all time. I didn't follow any strict rules, but just along the lines of acts that are considered Irish. Thus the Pogues are considered Irish because of Shane McGowan rather than the rest of the guys, but no-one ever claims Aphex Twin. Well not that I know of anyway. Feel free to abuse me for leaving something out, or giving preference to one album or another. I love the comments. And the fallout. Hopefully.

92nd, 77th and Rollerskate? Deranged, should be wayyy higher.

Immediate, yes!

Has Mic Christopher got songs?

Ronan said...

That Immediate album is fantastic. Can't wait for The Villagers' record.

Guilty pleasures those. Who hasn't sang along to the Saw Doctors? And Something Happens have much more than 'Parachute'!

Mic has got fantastic songs. Every one of them on the album is gorgeous.

Great list - maybe missing Ritual and Holy Pictures though?

And The Jimmy Cake?

Great job though, must have taken ages to compile

Ronan said...

Surely did take ages. Thus why I'm loving the comments. The more the merrier!

There are bound to be loads I've forgotten like Pony Club and the Jimmy Cake. Maybe for 2000, I'll do a top 200!

I left out Ritual and Holy Pictures as I wanted a more rounded list, and wanted to include more artists. Rather than those lists you see in the UK, that have Oasis and the Beatles from 1 to 10.

Mic's album is great, but number 1? Having said that, I am not sure I have a different one. A couple missing that I like are bury the hatchet (cranberries) and RSAG's, but those ones are probably personal choices... but Lisa Hannighan's? Come on, that should have made it!

Ronan said...

Maybe in a few years I'll love Lisa's more, but now, I just think it's half a great album. RSAG's could've gotten in there though.

Are you too young too remember: Cactus World News - Urban Beaches [1986]

one of the best produced rock albums of the 1980s

Unknown said...

Ronan ...... man you obviously forgot to include the 2 rollarskate skinny albums!

Great list and well done on all the comments.

RonanC said...

ACtually i never thought of RSAG - should be ther

A shame that The 4 Of Us face just doesn't seem to fit with regard to these lists. Classified Personal or Heaven and Earth are surely worthy of a spot ahead of some of the albums on this and many other similar lists I've seen...

Ronan said...

DJ Martian, I don't have that album. You've piqued my interest now!

Peter, I have one of the albums there actually. At least I should have!

Bren, the 4 of Us crossed my mind alright, but just missed out too.

Unknown said...

yeah sorry just seen that now! There's about 20ish albums I havent heard here. Again nice list.

Ronan said...

Peter: You should try and check out some of the more obscure ones. If I had have had a lot more time I would've tried to get clips or videos. Maybe the next 1000...

IndieLimerick said...

we can surely claim Aphex Twin he is from limerick!!

Mundy-Jelly Legs , i sense a second list a readers list of some sort would be cool!

Ronan said...

Thanks Keith. Glad you like the new look. It was inspired by Peter's lovely new look. Thought I'd do the same with mine. Was doing it late last night when the visitors were asleep! :D

A reader's list would be very interesting, but I'd say my readers are far too lazy!

Where are Six?

There's a whole lot of loving going on...what a song!

Great list Ronan.

Ronan said...

Ferg: Wait for the Top 100 Songs list. It'll be just after Aon Focal Eile.

great to see "Music in Mouth" feature in the top 10...a very underrated album that smacks of wonderful lyrics and catchy sounds

What are the saw doctors doing at 99. That album is sensational. I know the Saw Docs don't take themselves seriously, but they really deserve more credit, and recognition. Every single song on that album is 1st class!

Mic Christopher, by far the best Irish album
