Awards: Choice Music Prize 2009 Winner Adrian Crowley

Choice Music Prize 2009 Winner Adrian Crowley

Congratulations to Adrian Crowley who won the fifth annual Choice Music Award last night at Vicar Street. The award is given to the best Irish album of the year (thus Choice Music Prize 2009). His album Season of the Sparks was pronounced the winner by Jim Carroll of the Irish Times, who was the non-voting chair of an extensive judging panel, made up of luminaries from the entire Irish music scene.

Jim asked for predictions yesterday on his On the Record blog, and guess who picked the winner correctly. That's right, yours truly.

Awards: Meteor Music Most Promising Act 2010

Yesterday, the final five for the Meteor Music Awards' Most Promising New Artist 2010 were announced. If you followed the voting at all, you would have seen that there were about ten well-known acts and then a bunch of people you've never heard of. Now, don't get me wrong, this wasn't a bad idea, but the fact that it was a public-voting thing meant that whoever could draw in the most votes on facebook or bebo got through. To make it worse, you could vote once a day from your IP address, so you could repeatedly vote for your buddies - no need to register, and at no cost. For the past few weeks, I've been hounded by people sending me links to groups called "Vote for xxx at the Meteors", so I can't wait for it to be over.

But that said, nothing I can do about the voting, so here's your shortlist:

Awards: Choice Music Prize 2010 Odds

I'm not sure whether I should be calling this the Choice Music Prize 2010 or 2009, so I've hedged my bets and gone for both! PaddyPower.com has posted the odds for the award, so get your bets in now!

9/2 - And So I Watch You From Afar, The Duckworth Lewis Method
5/1 - Valerie Francis
11/2 - Bell x1
6/1 - Adrian Crowley, Dark Room Notes
8/1 - The Swell Season

My money is on Codes or Adrian Crowley by the way.

There's also a heated debate going on over at Jim Carroll's blog (he's the chairman of this thing), so feel free to join in here:
