Album News: Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues

The new full-length from Justin Townes Earle is one of my most anticipated albums of the year. His first two albums The Good Life and Midnight at the Movies have been fantastic, and the third features Jason Isbell on most, if not all, of the album. It's called Harlem River Blues and is due in September on Bloodshot.

Earle co-produced the album himself with Skylar Wilson, and features a fantastic supporting cast: Brian Owings on drums, Paul Niehaus (Calexico) on pedal steel guitar, and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) on harmonica.

Stream: Justin Townes Earle and Dawn Landes - Do I Ever Cross Your Mind

Justin Townes Earle and Dawn Landes are touring together stateside, and have taken time out to record a gorgeous duet. It's a toe-tapping love song, and hopefully will appear on Justin's upcoming 2010 album (he should have one out this year, he records enough mateial to anyway!) Even better though would be a duets album between Earle and Landes. Now that would be impressive.

Oh, and I couldn't find any photo of the pair together. First time you've failed me in a while interwebs.

Download: Justin Townes Earle - Pickathon Roots Music Festival Bootleg

Thank heavens for Llama, the Live Music Archive. They always have splendid bootlegs on there. None more splendid than a new Justin Townes Earle show from the 11th Annual Pickathon Roots Music Festival in Oregon on August 1st 2009. Justin does a nice Q&A as well as playing some new tunes. And by new I mean brand spanking new unreleased ones.

Watch: Justin Townes Earle - Midnight at the Movies

Somehow I doubt MTV and the like will be playing this tune, but I'm glad Justin made this strange video for it. Allows me to enjoy it all the more. I highly recommend the album of the same name, Midnight at the Movies for it's one of the best albums of the year.

Oh Jesus, oh Jesus. I am so disappointed to be missing the current tour of Jason Isbell and Justin Townes Earle. They've made my two favourite records of 2009, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Midnight at the Movies. However, some recordings of Justin's shows from the tour are available. One of which comes from the Turf Club, St Paul, MN on April 15th.

In it, Jason guests on Justin's cover of The Replacements' 'Can't Hardly Wait', as well as the entire 400 Unit on 'Birmingham Jail'. I suggest you download the entire show, but you can sample these two songs now.

Download: Justin Townes Earle live at the Cactus Cafe

Justin Townes Earle's Midnight at the Movies is one of the best records I'v heard this year. It's a contender for album of the year. Yes, it's that good. Listening to it (and his fantastic debut The Good Life) has made me check out his live show. Hopefully there will be an Irish appearance sometime. Please, pretty please.

Archive.org has a good few of his shows from last year available for free download, and from what I've listened to, the best of them is from the 14th of December at the Cactus Cafe.

Two songs to give you a treat of what you're in for are 'Ghost of Virginia' and his cover of the Replacements' 'Can't Hardly Wait', which he makes sound like a standard.

Album News: Justin Townes Earle - Midnight at the Movies

Justin releases a lot of albums. And with each one I think he's getting closer and closer to emulating his dad. The album is due out in March, and will feature plenty of slow jams. Perfect for a late spring evening. This probably would've been the alt-country record of the year, if it weren't for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.

Tracklist:
1. Midnight At The Movies
2. What I Mean To You
3. They Killed John Henry
4. Mama's Eyes
5. Dirty Rag

7. Black Eyed Suzy
8. Poor Fool
9. Halfway to Jackson
10. Someday I'll Be Forgiven For This
